Frequently asked questions
Where can I find free piano sheet music to sight read?
Every piece here is public domain or newly written, and 54 of them (Christian Schäfer’s Book 1 and Ludvig Schytte’s studies) are free to everyone with no subscription. Pro opens the remaining 3,700, from the Baroque through to the twentieth century.
What are the easiest pieces to sight read?
Start with the Schäfer studies: single lines, a five-finger position, and no key signature to hold in your head. After that, go by the difficulty rating on each card. Pick something one step above what you already read comfortably, not five steps above.
Can I filter the library by difficulty?
Yes. The difficulty filter narrows the list to a band, and search matches on title or composer. You can also browse composers grouped by era, or switch to the My pieces tab to see only the MusicXML files you have uploaded yourself.
How many pieces are in SightReader?
Over 3,700, drawn from the public-domain PDMX collection plus newly composed grade exercises. They span four centuries, from Bach, Scarlatti and Purcell through Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin to Debussy, Satie and Bartók. Every one is marked note by note as you play it.
Can I upload my own sheet music?
Yes, as MusicXML. Export it from Sibelius, MuseScore, Dorico or Finale, or use the file your teacher sent you. Uploads appear under My pieces and are marked exactly like the rest of the library. PDFs and photographs of sheet music are not supported.
Which pieces suit my grade?
The grade tracks are the reliable answer: each holds newly composed exercises written to what ABRSM asks for at that grade. In the library itself, go by the difficulty rating on each piece, and the placement check will suggest a starting grade in about three minutes.
