SightReader and Sight Reading Factory both help you get better at reading music at the keyboard, but they go about it in almost opposite ways, and which one fits you comes down to a single question: does anything check what you actually played?

Full disclosure before we start: we make SightReader. This is an honest comparison, with a whole section on when Sight Reading Factory is the better choice, because for a lot of people it genuinely is.

The core difference in one line

Sight Reading Factory generates an endless stream of exercises for you to read and grade yourself. SightReader listens to your MIDI keyboard, follows a real published piece, and marks each note green or red in real time. One gives you infinite material and trusts you to assess it; the other reads fewer-but-real pieces and does the assessing for you.

What Sight Reading Factory does well

Sight Reading Factory has been around for over a decade and is well regarded by teachers, especially in the US. The pitch is in the name: it generates an effectively unlimited supply of sight-reading exercises, customisable by key, time signature, difficulty and instrument. You will never run out of material, and for a teacher pulling up a fresh exercise on demand in a lesson, that workflow is hard to beat. It is browser-based, reliable, and if your reading is checked by someone else, its one big limitation simply doesn’t apply to you.

Where it leaves solo learners on their own

The gap that sends people looking is always the same: it can’t hear you. You read a generated exercise on screen and grade yourself. Practising alone, you have no independent check on whether you actually read the passage or quietly smoothed over the bar you fluffed — which is precisely the habit sight reading is meant to break.

Two smaller differences follow. Sight Reading Factory reads generated exercises rather than real pieces: technically correct, but assembled by a formula, so they tend to read as statistical rather than musical. And there’s no permanent free tier — a limited “sight-read for free” demo and a 30-day trial, then a subscription.

A note on that table, because we’d rather you heard it from us: Sight Reading Factory’s own difficulty levels are perfectly good, they’re just not mapped to the ABRSM grades, so the “ABRSM 1–8” row reflects labelling, not quality. And on price, an individual Sight Reading Factory subscription at $34.99 a year is genuinely inexpensive — roughly level with SightReader’s £48 annual plan. Where SightReader pulls ahead on cost isn’t the paid price, it’s that the core practice loop stays free.

SightReader’s approach

SightReader exists to close the feedback gap above. It listens to your MIDI keyboard, follows the score in real time, and colours notes green or red as you play. The cursor doesn’t stop — which is the whole point, because sight reading is performance mode, not rehearsal mode, and a practice tool has to enforce that or the habit never forms.

The library is just over four thousand real pieces from the public-domain repertoire, tagged by ABRSM grade from 1 up to advanced Grade 8, so there’s room whether you’re on your first pieces or a strong player after a challenge. Daily practice picks a handful at roughly the right level each day, and there’s a free note-recognition trainer for players still learning the notes and a scales mode alongside. Where it doesn’t win: it needs a MIDI keyboard (a phone-only setup won’t work), the teacher tools are earlier than Sight Reading Factory’s, and it won’t teach theory or replace a teacher.

For ABRSM exams

This is where a lot of readers land, and the honest answer is that the two tools do different halves of the job. Sight Reading Factory is good for drilling the exam-day format — a short passage, thirty seconds to look, then play — because it spits out fresh eight-bar snippets endlessly. SightReader builds the fluency underneath, by having you read a grade-aligned library at exactly your level with feedback on every note. Plenty of candidates use both. When Sight Reading Factory is the better choice

Genuinely, choose it if:

  • A teacher checks your reading. The missing feedback stops mattering, and the endless generated exercises are excellent lesson material.
  • You’re a teacher generating for a class. Fifteen years of polish on that exact workflow is hard to walk away from.
  • You only want to rehearse the exam format. For short-passage-then-play drilling, an on-demand generator simulates it well.

The verdict

If you practise alone and want something to tell you whether you actually read the notes, choose SightReader — that’s the case the missing-feedback gap hurts most, and the free tier means it costs nothing to find out. If your reading is already checked by a teacher, or you mainly want infinite exercises to drill the exam format, Sight Reading Factory is a fair and well-made tool and you may not need to switch at all.
